Huddersfield Town sitting third in the Championship - who'd have thought it?

Last night's victory over promotion hopefuls Norwich City cemented their case as serious promotion contenders after a fantastic start to the season.

Reading can leapfrog the Terriers and send them back to fourth if they beat Blackburn later today but a guaranteed top four spot at Christmas is the perfect early gift for David Wagner and Huddersfield fans.

Before the start of the season, many considered Huddersfield to be relegation candidates but they have taken everyone by surprise and have been knocking about at the top of the league all year.

This could be a perfect chance to seal a historic first-ever promotion to the top flight in the Premier League era.

Unfortunately, they have picked a competitive year to come good.

Newcastle and Brighton are running away with the league and look so ruthlessly good that it's difficult to see anyone catching them.

On top of that, Huddersfield (in 3rd place) are only 7 points clear of Fulham in 10th and all the teams below them have a game in hand.

Plus the play-offs are a gamble; it's anyone's to win and if you have an off day, the whole season can be ruined.

Huddersfield must therefore back Wagner with funds in January to ensure they have the best possible chance of winning promotion.

You never know if this is the only year they'll be competing at the top because of the increasingly competitive nature of the second tier.

There is a strong core of talented players, such as Aaron Mooy and Elias Kachunga, but a few more top quality additions will really boost Huddersfield's promotion bid and could maybe even land them a coveted place among England's elite.
