Sunderland are right in the running for automatic promotion back to the Championship, and despite sitting four points behind Barnsley, they'll be relatively happy with their position.

The Black Cats got themselves three points in mid-week with a 4-2 win at the Stadium of Light, a result which was much needed following a 2-2 draw with Accrington the last time out.

Crucially in the win over the Gills, the Black Cats saw £4m signing Will Grigg get off the mark from the penalty spot in his fourth game for the club, a big monkey off the back of the former Wigan man as he looks to settle in and make the difference for Jack Ross and his team.

Grigg, who was brought in to replace the goals lost from the sale of Josh Maja, was beginning to look a bit flustered after missing a host of chances in his opening few games for the club, but he looked back to his best this past week, netting confidently from the penalty spot to put Sunderland in the lead.

This goal should give the Northern Irishman plenty to go with now, and he should be capable of hitting the sort of form which has seen him build a reputation as one of the best goal getters outside of the top two divisions.

With Grigg in form and his tail up, three more points should follow this weekend in what is a tough away trip to Bristol Rovers.

Sunderland can at times look a class above the opposition in League One, and if they can produce what they did against Gillingham and keep Grigg firing, promotion could well be on the cards.
