Gary Rowett's Birmingham City are a side that are really flying high in the Championship right now.

Sitting in sixth going into the international break, the Blues have enjoyed a solid start to the campaign that quite frankly, has taken some of their supporters by surprise.

In a league that offers so much quality these days, it's going to be tough for most sides to make a push for the top-six but you've got to credit Birmingham, they're outperforming a handful of sides that had been tipped for success at the start of the campaign.

But in this article we want to discuss one man in particular and he's one that some neutral fans might not have heard of too much.

His name? Greg Stewart.

The 26-year-old winger was a summer signing from Dundee and he arrived at St Andrews for around £500,000, which could rise to over £1 million in the future.

He's had to sit on the bench for the whole season so far but gave Blues fans a real glimpse of his quality for the first time in the impressive 2-1 home defeat over Sheffield Wednesday in September.

In-front of the Sky cameras, Stewart certainly didn't shy away and in the half-an-hour he did spend on the pitch, he was fantastic.

Fit, fearless and skillful, he more than worked the Wednesday full-backs in the run-up to Lukas Jutkiewicz' winner and many thought he might go on to start a game after his performance.

But again, Rowett has made him wait and he's still to start a league game this season. You can't begrudge Rowett one bit- his team have raced into the top-six so it's obvious his choices are working and to have this selection dilemma is a welcome problem for the former Burton gaffer.

But it was on Wednesday when Stewart really shone again for the Blues, this time, in an U23's match against Brentford. A behind closed doors friendly, Stewart scored twice and assisted once in a man-of-the-match performance that surely attracted his manager's attention once again.

It's just more evidence to suggest the silky Scot deserves a shot in the first-team but the problem he faces more than anything is the good form being shown by others infront of him. Who does Rowett drop to bring him into the side?

Well, Jacques Maghoma has been absolutely superb this season whilst Che Adams has come in from Sheffield United and done well too. This is where the problem lies for Stewart- the competition at St Andrews is far better than it has been for years.

A couple of years ago, the former Dundee man would have waltzed into Lee Clark's Birmingham side but fast-forward a couple of years, the standards at the club under Gary Rowett are just so much higher.

It's slightly unfortunate and slightly encouraging at the same time. There is little doubt Stewart probably deserves a shot in the starting lineup but this question will be more easily answered if one of his team-mates loses form.

For Birmingham fans though, it's an ideal situation. Their starters are playing well and they've got proven quality ready and waiting in the wings as well.
