Sheffield United sit top of the League One table as it stands, and it has been a superb season for the Blades so far.

As a Blade myself, the passion and commitment Chris Wilder has brought back to Bramall Lane is something which I have been waiting to see for a number of years now. We are playing some top football, are attacking with intent, and defending well enough on the whole.

So it might seem daft and a bit petty that I am questioning whether League One's joint top scorers are wasting too many chances. However, it could well come back to bite us.

Yesterday was a prime example of the Blades not finishing a game off. The game should have been out of sight for Gillingham by the end of the first half, with Billy Sharp smashing in yet another goal to put the Blades ahead. However, we simply could not get the all important second.

Now this is not a criticism at all, but when you are top of the league have aspirations of winning the league, you have simply got to be killing teams off when you're on top. Paul Coutts and John Fleck ran the show in the middle of the park, but barring Sharp up top, nobody else really looked like hitting the back of the net.

We got away with it against Northampton, and likewise against Bury, when we bagged late on to win the game. They are of course massive wins, and three points are what matters, but sooner or later - like yesterday - we will fall foul.

It is this niggling worry which sits in my mind, with a feeling that it might cost us long term. Sure, it is a great position to be in, given that this is the only moan I can really have, but I do feel we could address it. So, what do we need to do?

For me, United need to add someone with a bit of drive from the midfield. Someone who can get on the ball, and run at a defence with pace. Mark Duffy has been brilliant, and is a top player, but having that man on the bench or in the eleven who can just put a defence on the back foot, is crucial against teams who come to the Lane and just sit and defend.

It will be interesting to see how Carruthers fits in when fit, and also if Wilder does move for another striker, such as James Hanson who has been linked.

All in all though, I am delighted with the season so far. If someone would have said to me in August we would be sat top of the league, and the only thing I can find to half grumble at is missing a few chances, I would have snapped their hand off!

A similar second half to the season as we have seen in the first will see us promoted, which when all is said and done, is the only thing that matters come the end of April.

UTB!
