It seems that Charlton Athletic are starting to make moves in the January transfer window.

While the Addicks are so far yet to make a signing since the market reopened at the turn of the year, the recently appointed Dean Holden may now be close to his signing as the club's manager.

According to recent reports from Football Insider, Charlton are currently leading the race to sign left-back Tayo Edun on loan from Blackburn Rovers.

So far, Edun has enjoyed a somewhat frustrating season at Ewood Park, featuring in just eight league games for the Championship club since the start of the campaign.

But while things may not have worked out for the 24-year-old under new Rovers head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson so far, this is still a move Charlton should surely be pushing hard to complete.

For starters, left-back is an area that the Addicks badly need reinforcement in, with the club currently lacking a senior option in that area of the pitch, forcing on-loan Tottenham right-back Steven Sessegnon to fill in on that side of defence.

With that something that has arguably left them under-strength in that position at times this season, it is a position you feel needs to be prioritised at The Valley during the current transfer window.

In Edun, they would be getting a natural option in that position, who showed he can be more than reliable at this level during his time with Lincoln City, which eventually earned him that move to Ewood Park in the summer of 2021.

Indeed, there have also been flashes from Edun of his ability to play at a higher level during his time at Blackburn, which also goes to highlight how useful he could be for a League One side such as Charlton.

That is also enhanced by the versatility of the 24-year-old, who is also capable of playing in midfield and has shown at Rovers that he is capable of creating chances for others to take, which could also be vital for the Addicks as they go in search of some morale boosting and position strengthening results in the next few months.

Meanwhile, it is also worth noting that Charlton are not the only League One side who are seemingly keen on Edun, with the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and the left-back's former club Lincoln all also credited with an interest.

As a result, signing the full-back would both be a lift for Charlton in terms of their options, and a blow for some of their divisional rivals.

Given the off-field uncertainty that seems to be hanging over the club at the minute, that could make this just the sort of coup that is needed around The Valley, to help lift the mood of the fanbase to some extent.

With all that in mind, you feel that there can be no escaping the fact that Charlton must be doing all they can to ensure they take advantage of their position as leaders in this transfer race, and get Edun to The Valley in the next few weeks.
