We are just four days into the January transfer window but Burton Albion have been busy already.
Nigel Clough is notoriously keen to do business when transfer windows come and this one looks like it’ll be no different.
The Championship new boys have exceeded expectations so far but still find themselves balancing one place and one point above the drop zone.
I agree that Burton need to strengthen in January but contrary to Clough’s current approach, I think they need to add two or three quality players rather than needlessly bulking up the squad.
He has brought in Marvin Sordell who, despite showing signs of recapturing his form from a couple of years ago, has only netted a handful of goals in his half season at Coventry.
Admittedly he has played out of position on the wing but he is still not the prolific goalscorer they were crying out for.
And then they’ve also Luke Varney, who has been average at best in the second tier for the last several years.
Neither Sordell nor Varney will score the goals to keep Burton in this division.
Burton were shrewd in the summer, adding important stars such as Jamie Ward, John Brayford, Ben Turner and Jackson Irvine.
The Brewers need to add more players like this quartet of new stars.
Players that will come in and immediately improve the squad, rather than just making it bigger.
If they have the money to splash on five or six average or below average Championship players then they should instead look at two or three better players.
Quality rather than quantity will keep Burton Albion in the Championship.
