Opinion: Bristol City must consider second attempt to land in-form 12-goal ace amid recent admission from key figure

Bristol City have endured a frustrating last few weeks that has seen their form drop off in the Championship and they are now sat in 19th place in the table.

As a result, the Robins are at a crossroads in their season with them being both seven points off the play-off play-offs and also seven points clear of the bottom three.

Despite the Robins’ recent form in the Championship that has seen them lose five of their previous six outings, Bristol City CEO Richard Gould has insisted to Bristol Live this week that Nigel Pearson still retains the backing of the club’s hierarchy.

While he also revealed that in light of the Robins’ recent form in the Championship the club have reassessed their transfer objectives for January and funds will now be made available to strengthen the squad.

Pearson was backed with four new arrivals in the summer, but one area of the squad that he is widely known to have wanted to add to was upfront.

To that end, Bristol City were constantly linked with a potential move for Rotherham United forward Michael Smith after he had scored ten goals in 44 appearances for the Millers as they were relegated to League One.

In the end, Bristol City dropped their interest in Smith towards the end of the transfer window and that meant that Rotherham were able to hang onto him after a summer of speculation.

The Robins’ decision not to pursue Smith, in the end, has proven to be a real mistake by the form that the forward has been able to show in League One for Rotherham this term. The 30-year-old is enjoying one of the most prolific campaigns in his career with him firing home 12 goals in just 16 appearances to date.

Smith’s form in October, in particular, has now seen him be named Sky Bet League One’s Player of the Month following him firing home five goals and registered two assists in five appearances in that month.

Considering Bristol City’s need for another forward option they should now surely be once again taking a firm look at Smith in the January transfer window. The powerful target man could be exactly the right sort of player to bring into Ashton Gate and add more goals to the side given he will be full of confidence at the moment.

The 30-year-old is proven at Championship level and scoring ten times in a relegated side is not bad going which is what he managed to do last term. Bristol City might be able to unlock even more end product from him with their extra quality when compared with the Millers’ options.

However, getting him out of Rotherham when they are in the middle of a promotion challenge is not going to be easy. It will take a strong offer from the Robins to get this deal done if they go for it, but Gould’s insistence that money will be made available in January could make it a possibility.
