Bolton Wanderers will be targeting further progress when the 2022/23 campaign begins at the end of July.

The Trotters, who finished ninth in League One this time around, ended the campaign 10 points off the play-off positions.

Ian Evatt will now be assessing his options ahead of what could be a big summer for Bolton, in order to try and bridge the gap from where they are now, to a position where they can be in contention for promotion.

The Trotters have only seen improvement under Evatt thus far, and if current progress can be sustained, then they will be eyeing up a spot in the top six next year.

Already possessing some excellent options at this level of football, Evatt will be looking to apply the finishing touches to the squad over the next couple of months.

Given the soon-to-be departures of the likes of Alex Baptiste, Andrew Tutte and Nathan Delfouneso, recruiting experience could be deemed important by the 40-year-old with next season in mind.

One player that would certainly bolster the competition levels within the squad, and fit the bill in regards to experience is Hull City midfielder Richard Smallwood.

A report from Hull Live has claimed that Peterborough United are currently interested in making a move for the 31-year-old, whilst it also stated that there is interest elsewhere in League One.

Appearing 41 times in the league for the Tigers during the 2021/22 campaign, that same article has reported that Smallwood turned down an offer of a 12-month extension at the MKM Stadium.

Not only is Smallwood a player that will bring invaluable experience to a Bolton side who will be considering themselves as promotion candidates this season, the grit and desire he brings to the midfield position makes him an attractive proposition.

The Hull captain also played an integral role during the first half of Hull's promotion-winning campaign in the 2020/21 season, returning from injury at the death to help his side over the line.

Also a composed figure in possession, his ability to retain possession and to choose the right moments to be brave with his passing, Smallwood would be an excellent addition and would allow Aaron Morley to flourish slightly ahead of him.
