Most would say no to this question but if you look at the bare bones of the matter, it’s entirely possible that these two clubs have the same basis on the pitch and off it.
Most promotion rivals have a main goalscorer who will bag 20 goals a season regularly, like Burnley having Andre Gray and QPR having Charlie Austin.
Middlesbrough and Brighton though seem to have goals coming from all over the pitch meaning they are not reliant on one outlet for goals.
They both have a main man up front but also have a large number of goals being scored from the midfield, which is crucial when injuries hit.
Middlesbrough have regular sources of goals in midfield such as Fabbrini and Adomah whilst Downing, Ayala and Leadbitter will contribute a large tally as well.
Nugent and Stuani are the main men up top though and will score the bulk of the goals but Middlesbrough are certainly not reliant on them.
Brighton on the other hand – whilst Hemed’s goals have been crucial to them hitting the top, Lualua and Stephens have been contributing to the goals tally as well.
Kayal and Baldock also will prove crucial to them this season. Both sides have a solid defensive basis to build on with two of the best defences in the league.
Dunk and Ayala are fairly similar centre-backs, whilst many will say the latter is superior they are both imperious in the air, good leaders and also goalscorers.
They have similar industrious midfields both crucial to their team’s success whilst both teams managers have overseen an extraordinary turnaround, and are both in the promotion fray this season. ]
Both have solid leaders in the shape of Greer and Leadbitter.
But in my opinion the similarities stop when you look at the strength in depth that has come about due to the money spent by Karanka.
Middlesbrough will be expected to last the pace whilst Brighton are still seen as a surprise package. But they are unbeaten and will be taken seriously as promotion candidates and it will be a truly extraordinary achievement if Hughton can get them promoted.
So what do you think Brighton and Middlesbrough fans? Are you built on a similar basis or is it merely coincidence? Will Brighton last the pace? Leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
