Steve Morison appears to see new signing Kion Etete as a signing for both the now and the future, and laughed off suggestions of signing former Liverpool hitman Andy Carroll last Thursday - so where should he go instead?

Football League World has come up with 3 potential destinations for the Gateshead-born target man which could suit him down to the ground. As always with Carroll, however, the caveat is that these would be great moves only if he is able to stay fit and available.

Reading

Reading are facing something of an availability dilemma at this early stage of the season. New signing Shane Long came on late against Blackpool and, despite his goal against Cardiff on Saturday, may struggle to play a 46 game season. More generally the squad needs some new faces to flesh it out ahead of what may well be a tough campaign for the Royals.

With Carroll, what Reading would get above all is familiarity. He did as well as anyone could have expected during his half-season cameo, scoring twice in eight games; indeed, he was unlucky not to add more to his collection with those two disallowed bangers against Fulham.

They were desperate to keep him when his contract expired last January and, even though he opted for West Brom back then, he'd surely be welcomed back to the Royals this summer.

Rotherham

Manager Paul Warne is insistent that star man Chiedozie Ogbene is not for sale, but with just 12 months left on his contract and Swansea City showing concrete interest in the striker, Rotherham may soon be persuaded to sell and therefore in the hunt for a new striker to pair up with Conor Washington.

As a budget option they could do far worse than free agent Andy Carroll, who was reportedly earning just £1000 per week with Reading last year, while perhaps spending the rest of the sum on a younger option. The thought of passing supremo Dan Barlaser, a fellow Gateshead native and ex-Newcastle man, hitting long balls through to Carroll would certainly strike fear in the heart of many a Championship defence.

Not to mention it'd be a lot of fun. They may not have the status of some of Carroll's other former clubs, all of whom have been past or present Premier League outfits, but at this stage of his career Carroll would surely appreciate the opportunity for regular game time in the second tier regardless.

Bristol Rovers

This one is not only a romantic choice but also would make perfect footballing sense. Heading to the Severnside would allow Carroll to link up with former team-mate and friend Joey Barton, who offered his help to the striker ahead of a court case in 2010 and has been known previously to talk up the talents of his former colleague, once even comparing him to Sergio Aguero.

It would also provide some much needed firepower to a recently-promoted Bristol Rovers side to complement new signing John Marquis, who struggled in League One at Lincoln City last season.

If everything goes right on and off the pitch, the Barton-Carroll combination could well keep Rovers in the league - it would certainly be a quite a story.
