Coventry City are preparing themselves for the biggest test of the season to date when high-flying Scunthorpe United travel down to the Midlands for the League One encounter.

The Iron recruited well this summer and have made a superb start to this season's promotion-chasing campaign.

They currently sit top of the league with a three point gap (and favourable goal difference) between them and second placed Bolton Wanderers.

Scunthorpe are also five points clear of third spot and they have really set the benchmark for the rest of the league.

Coventry, by contrast, started the season abysmally.

The Sky Blues were rock bottom of the league and without a win when Tony Mowbray decided it was best if he left his role as manager.

There has been a recovery as of late, though, and Coventry now sit 18th in the league; three points off of the relegation zone and only five points off a play-off spot.

Although it looks like a mismatch if you study the league table, here are three reasons why Coventry can beat Scunthorpe at The Ricoh tomorrow.

The Venus effect

Coventry have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in fortunes since interim manager Mark Venus has stepped forward to handle managerial duties.

The Sky Blues won away at then-unbeaten Port Vale in his first game and have since gone on a superb run to lift themselves off the foot of the table and fire them up the league table.

Coventry have won six out of the nine games Venus has overseen and only lost one of those too.

The midfield battle

The midfield battle will be crucial in this fixture and Coventry arguably have one of the best central midfield departments in the league.

Gael Bigirimana has been superb since re-joining his boyhood club on permanent terms; Ben Stevenson looks like a technically gifted and extremely talented academy product whilst Andy Rose is way too good to be playing at League One level.

Coventry will have their work cut out to keep Scunthorpe's attackers quiet and to break down the Iron's defence but the midfield battle will probably belong to the Sky Blues, which could set the platform for a victory.

Home advantage

Coventry are currently enjoying their best run of form at home since the 1960s.

The Ricoh Arena has really been turned into a fortress despite all the other problems on and off the field with Coventry City.

Mark Venus will be hoping that they can keep their unbeaten home record for another game when Scunthorpe come to visit.
