Coventry City fans were left in shock and bewilderment as The Coventry Telegraph journalist Andy Turner broke the news last night that Yakubu was to undergo a fitness test ahead of a potential switch to the West Midlands club.

Coventry are well adrift at the foot of the League One table and League Two looks an inevitability.

Russell Slade made it clear that he wanted to add more strikers to his squad during the January window after snapping up Stuart Beavon in a swap deal for top scorer Marvin Sordell on New Year's Day.

However, he only managed to sign young duo Charles Vernam and Michael Folivi on loan from Derby and Watford respectively.

Both of those young strikers sat out of last weekend's 2-0 loss to Millwall with injury.

Yakubu would certainly present a different option up front with the experienced striker due at Ryton on Monday.

Here are 2 pros and 2 cons to his signing.

CON - Does he still have the legs?

Yakubu's last spell in England was at Reading in 2015, where he looked like he'd lost it a bit.

Two years on, has his fitness improved?

Does he have the legs to perform at League One level?

That remains to be seen.

PRO - He knows where the net is

Yakubu is a proven goal scorer - just what Coventry need!

He has 95 goals in the Premier League after spells with the likes of Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Blackburn and Everton.

He also has an impressive 21 goals in 57 international caps for Nigeria.

CON - Is he the quick fix Coventry need?

Coventry are five points adrift of second bottom and 8 points clear of safety.

The Sky Blues have not won in 13 league games, with 2 draws and 11 losses in that period.

Is Yakubu really going to inspire Coventry out of this rut?

PRO - Desperation

Coventry are desperate for a striker.

Stuart Beavon seems competent but he is not a prolific goal scorer.

The other options - Marcus Tudgay, George Thomas, Michael Folivi and Charles Vernam - are either unproven or below par.

Can Yakubu be any worse?
