Antoine Semenyo was handed a first league start under Phil Parkinson as Sunderland travelled to Bristol Rovers and fell to a limp 2-0 defeat, seeing them fall out of the play-off places.

The Black Cats arrived at the Memorial Stadium looking to put to rest a run of three games without defeat that had taken them from within touching distance of the top two, to at risk of being taken out of the top six with 12 games to go.

A poor overall performance from the visitors was punished by Bristol Rovers as Jonson Clarke-Harris netted a brace to boost both his former club’s automatic promotion hopes as Coventry City and Rotherham United celebrate dropped points elsewhere in the top six.

Having joined on-loan from Sunderlands’ opponents’ bitter rivals Bristol City, Antoine Semenyo came in under Phil Parkinson to add depth up front ahead of the promotion run-in, whilst offering a different angle in the attack to the taller and more direct strikers in their ranks.

No goals on the night for Semenyo or Sunderland in general as they slumped to defeat and stretched the winless run to four, but the young forward looked to make the most of his outing by looking somewhat lively in the final third, despite a lack of cutting edge from the rest of the side.
