Norwich City winger Onel Hernandez has admitted to wanting to stay at Carrow Road past the end of the current season with his deal set to expire in six months.

The Cuban is one of eight City first-teamers who out of contract at the end of the season. It's a group that includes Kieran Dowell and Teemu Pukki, who David Wagner confirmed was mulling over an offer to remain in Norfolk.

Hernandez has been at the club for the last five years and has made over 100 appearances during that time. With talks yet to open, the former Eintracht Braunschweig attacker has made little secret of his desire to stay at Norwich.

When asked about wanting to stay, Hernandez told the Eastern Daily Press: “100 per cent.

"I have always said I want to be like Alex Tettey. One of those guys. A few years ago when we played together, he was already 34 or something. He loved the club and I enjoyed that.

“We have in the training ground a wall where all the players are that have played for the longest here. I’ve always said I want to be there but maybe I’ll have to write myself on there. We will see.”

Hernandez scored Norwich's second goal in their 4-2 victory over Coventry City on Saturday, with the 29-year-old starting for only the sixth time since returning to Norwich in the summer after loan spells away from the club.

Wagner has started the Cuban in all three of his matches in charge of the Canaries with former manager Dean Smith opting to use Hernandez sparingly.

With Hernandez in good form and being picked by the manager, it could prompt the club to extending his stay at Carrow Road.

The Verdict

Hernandez has been a squad player in his time at Norwich since his arrival in 2018.

He's contributed to some big moments and will always be a crowd favourite but the club has some significant decisions to make in the summer on several key personnel.

With the decision potentially out of Wagner's hands, Hernandez will need to keep on performing to ensure he can convince the hierarchy at the club to offer him an extended stay.
