Nottingham Forest forward Hillal Soudani is reportedly on the verge of joining Greek side Olympiacos, having been pictured ahead of a potential move to Greece.

The Reds will be looking to go one step further in their quest for Premier League football next season, after their 2018/19 campaign culminated in bitter disappointment last term.

But as Martin O’Neill looks to rebuild his squad ahead of the new season, it looks as if Soudani could be the first one to leave the City Ground this summer, despite failing to make a single appearance under O’Neill’s stewardship.

Here, FLW writer George Harbey discusses the Hillal Soudani situation at Nottingham Forest...

How did Soudani’s time at the City Ground start off?

"After signing from Dinamo Zagreb, Soudani's time at the City Ground kicked off in impressive style really.

"He found game-time hard to come by in the first few games of the campaign, but scored two goals in the space of the week, coming off the bench against Reading to net a late winner, and then coming off the bench to last-gasp equaliser against Wigan Athletic."

Where did it all go wrong for him?

"Having made just seven appearances between August and October, the Algerian was given a chance to shine against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup.

"But things went incredibly downhill for the striker, who was taken off on the hour mark with a knee injury that ultimately saw him miss the remainder of the campaign.

"He finished the season with two goals in a total of just eight appearances to his name."

Surprised to see him leaving?

"I am very surprised to see Soudani leave Forest to be quite honest.

"He has hardly put a foot wrong for the Reds since joining last summer, and hasn't been given a chance to impress under O'Neill whatsoever.

"To let him leave without giving him a chance to shine is very risky indeed."

How do you think he should be feeling?

"I think Soudani should be feeling very disappointed, but excited at the same time.

"Of course, leaving Forest will probably be a bitter pill to swallow, as he looked very sharp in the games that he actually played in last season.

"Then again, he's on the verge of joining a massive club in Olympiacos, who could be playing in the Champions League should they qualify, and that opportunity cannot be turned down at his age."

Do you think he will be successful in Greece?

"I think Soudani has everything in his locker to able to succeed over in Greece with Olympiacos.

"He has a magnificent goal-scoring record from his time in Croatia, and the standard of football in the Greek Super League is probably the same or thereabouts.

"He may be ageing, but he is still very fast and has a good eye for goal, and I think Martin O'Neill could live to regret this."

With Soudani on the verge of leaving, do Forest need to strengthen their attacking options?

"I'd say that Forest are definitely in need of a new, younger forward.

"Lewis Grabban and Daryl Murphy will score you goals in the Championship, but they are approaching the final stages of their careers now, and Forest need to be thinking about the long-term.

"Even if Soudani wasn't to leave, they still need another striker in my view."
