Middlesbrough have reportedly registered their interest in signing in-form Peterborough striker Ivan Toney according to Football Insider.

Toney has been in impressive form for the League One side, and already has ten league goals to his name as Darren Ferguson's side sit top of the third tier in the early stages of this season.

On the other hand, Middlesbrough are in desperate need of goals this season, as they look as though they're facing a battle to retain their status as a Championship club.

Jonathan Woodgate's side are winless in their last six league games, and it seems as though the Boro boss is already making plans to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

Toney doesn't have any experience of playing in the second tier though, which will be a slight concern for Middlesbrough supporters, who will be keen to see their side edge clear of the relegation zone as soon as possible.

We look at one winner and one loser if Middlesbrough were to land Toney's signature in January.

Winner: Lewis Wing

It's no secret that Middlesbrough have struggled for goals this season, with Britt Assombalonga being their top goalscorer with just four goals in all competitions.

Lewis Wing is a player that provides the creative spark for Boro, but he hasn't had players with confidence playing in front of him, which will have been frustrating for the 24-year-old.

But Toney certainly isn't short of any confidence, which is evident in the ten goals he has scored for Peterborough so far this season and I'm sure Wing would welcome the club signing a player that is in a good run of form in front of goal.

Loser: Ashley Fletcher

Fletcher has had to be patient for opportunities in the Middlesbrough team this season, despite Britt Assombalonga showing inconsistency in front of goal.

Fletcher was handed a start against Huddersfield Town in the week, but missed a golden opportunity from just two yards out, which could lead to him being taken out of the starting XI for their game against Fulham on Saturday.

If Toney was to arrive in January, you have to feel as though Fletcher's days are numbered at The Riverside, and he could potentially be tempted by a move away from Woodgate's side, whether that be a permanent switch or a loan move to find regular game time.
