Derby County sacked Phillip Cocu last night after their awful start to the Championship season.

The Rams had been hoping to compete for promotion in this campaign but they sit bottom of the table after 11 games, having picked up just six points.

Therefore, Cocu was under huge pressure and the announcement of his dismissal came last night.

With a new takeover set to be finalised in the coming week, it really is the beginning of a new era at Pride Park and here we look at ONE winner and ONE loser following the decision to sack Cocu...

Winner: Wayne Rooney

He's a potential winner anyway, as he is the favourite to succeed Cocu.

Rooney has made it clear over the years that he wants to be a manager one day and it appears that day could come around very soon.

Whilst it's by no means a certainty that he will land the top job, as mentioned, he is favourite and he will lead the group in preparations for next weeks game.

Getting the Derby job at 35-years-old would be huge for Rooney as it's a fantastic opportunity for him at a big club.

Loser: Curtis Davies

The experienced defender has had a tough few years with injuries not helping and he struggled to properly nail down a first-team place.

That was until recently. Davies is one of a select few to emerge with credit in recent weeks following his performances at centre-back but Cocu's sacking means it will be a clean slate for everyone under the new boss.

With several defensive options at Pride Park, the ex-Aston Villa man faces a battle to stay in the XI.
