Rudy Gestede put in a man of the match performance against Nottingham Forest in front of the Sky cameras on Monday night which leaves Jonathan Woodgate a selection headache.

The French forward, who has been left out of the start 11 in recent weeks, was in the right place at the right time steer home Harold Moukoudi's cross goal effort. Cancelling out Ryan Yates' low driven shot just 11 minutes previously.

Boro would take the lead before half time through Lewis Wing before Forest drew level with just four minutes to play through Lewis Grabban.

This start was only Gestede's second start in the Sky Bet Championship this season, with his other 14 appearances coming from the substitute bench. However, goals breed confidence for strikers and the Frenchman's latest strike could set him up for a run in the side; it has certainly given manager Woodgate something to ponder ahead of the visit to Charlton.

Here is one winner and one loser from Gestede's statement performance...

Winner: Marcus Tavernier

Gestede is the perfect type of centre-forward for young Tavernier to play with. The French striker has a real presence in the penalty area and can effectively hold the ball up and bring his teammates into play. With the young winger always looking to get around his full-back and put a ball into a dangerous area then Gestede seems like the right choice for Woodgate to utilise.

The next step for Tavernier is to start adding more end product to his game having accumulated four assists in the Sky Bet Championship this season. That number is not necessarily down to his performances but the lack of a physical number nine who will get on the end of his crosses. With Gestede set to get a run in the team, Boro fans could see that number rise between now and the end of the season.

Loser: Ashley Fletcher

In their last two Sky Bet Championship games, Woodgate has referred Boro back to a familiar 4-2-3-1 formation. The former Manchester United striker appeared to have picked up a knock against Leeds United in midweek with a suspected hamstring problem. This allowed Gestede to worm his way back into favour with a positive performance against Forest.

With Woodgate seemingly pleased with the system deployed against Leeds and Forest, Boro look set to line up in a similar formation when they face Charlton in a real relegation six-pointer at the Valley. Should Gestede add to his influential performance from Monday night, Fletcher could find it hard work to get back into Woodgate’s plans.
