Derby County are bottom of the Championship, with the Rams now five points from safety after 14 league games.

Already, the January window seems crucial, as the Derby squad looks weak in several areas and they will need more quality to help the group push up the table.

And, it appears work us been made on that front, as The Sunday Mirror (29/11, p72) revealed that Newcastle's Matty Longstaff is a loan target.

The 20-year-old is highly-rated by the Magpies but he isn't getting regular minutes right now, so a temporary switch could happen to help the development of the midfielder.

Winner: Matty Longstaff

You'd have to say that the big winner from this potential transfer would be Longstaff.

The chance to move to a club like Derby, to be a key player and to get regular minutes, is a great opportunity for him. It's a chance for the youngster to show to his parent club that he can perform at a very good level.

We've seen a host of talented individual benefit from a loan move, and this could be the making of Longstaff.

Loser: Max Bird

If Longstaff does sign at Pride Park, he will go straight into the team. So, one loser would be Max Bird.

There's no denying the midfielder is a great talent but he has only featured in eight games this season, so another arrival in his position is obviously going to make playing harder for Bird.

He needs to be patient though, as he has the potential to be a fine player in the years to come.
