One winner and one loser if Nottingham Forest make big call over 19-year-old

Brennan Johnson’s future has emerged as a talking point this week, as the Wales international continues to impress on loan at Lincoln City.

Johnson left Nottingham Forest to join Lincoln on a season-long loan deal in the summer, after impressing in brief cameos under Sabri Lamouchi last term.

The young midfielder has since scored twice and produced four assists for the Imps, thriving in a wide position.

With Forest struggling to create any real clear-cut chances of late, former Red Garry Birtles has urged the club to recall Johnson from his loan spell in January.

Speaking on the Garibaldi Red podcast, he said: “If they do bring him back then massive pressure comes onto his shoulders. If they do bring him back then it would be to put him in the team and not put him on the bench.

“There’s no point bringing him back to sit on the bench. I look at Gareth Southgate with England. He’ll give young players a chance if they’re doing well for their team. Players in form, you should give them a chance.

“Tell him you’ll give him a chance and let’s see what you can do. Forest can’t lose by it if they’re not doing well at the bottom of the league.”

Here, we take a look at one winner and one loser at Forest if the club do go and recall Johnson in January…

Winner: Lyle Taylor

Taylor has often looked isolated under Hughton of late, with the striker failing to receive any adequate service up top.

The striker scored three goals in two games before the international break, but he is since yet to find the net and chances have been few and far between.

Johnson is a young, creative player who can play at number 10 out wide, though, and bringing in someone of his ability should increase chances and give Taylor more service.

Loser: Luke Freeman

Freeman has struggled to make an impact since arriving from Sheffield United, scoring only one goal and failing to register an assist.

The attacking midfielder has been used as a number 10 and out wide, but a frustrating run of form, coupled up with a groin injury, has led to a frustrating start to the season.

If Johnson is recalled, then you’d expect him to be at the forefront of Hughton’s plans which could have an effect on Freeman’s game time.
