Swansea City are the Championship’s surprise package under their new manager Steve Cooper this season, but not everyone’s a winner in South Wales.

Nothing spectacular was expected of Swansea when they appointed the casually-dressed Steve Cooper in the Summer.

The 39-year-old had previously worked in the England youth set-ups before being given the Swansea job in June this year.

His team are fourth after 11 games, with just one point separating them from leaders West Brom.

Fans are excited about this new Swansea team, who’s approach under Cooper encourages the fluid and attractive football that Swansea donned under Brendan Rodgers previously.

Cooper has made stars out of his players but not everyone has been smiling since he arrived.

Here we take a look at one winner and one loser for Swansea so far this season.

Borja Baston

Borja Baston was signed by the club back in 2016 but he’s made less than 30 appearances in white since.

He was the club-record signing at the time when he arrived in Wales for £15.5 million from Atletico Madrid.

But he fell out of favour under first Bob Bradley, and then Paul Clement, before subsequently being loaned-out for two consecutive seasons.

Baston made for relatively underwhelming seasons with Malaga and then Alaves in Spain, before Cooper was appointed as Swansea boss and Baston was back in the frame in Wales.

This season he has scored six goals in the Championship, and has been a key figure in Cooper’s system which favours the neo-tactical 4-2-3-1 formation giving Baston as the ‘1’ plenty of goal-scoring opportunities.

Kristoffer Nordfeldt

The Swedish keeper is yet to make a Championship appearance for Swansea this season - he’s not even made the bench in a league game since mid-September.

Young Frederick Woodman has been Swansea’s number one this season, and the 22-year-old has kept four clean sheets and looks to be a prospect at the Liberty Stadium.

Nordfeldt has been with Swansea since signing from Dutch side Heerenveen in 2015, but has only made 25 league appearances in that time - 22 of them coming in the Championship last season.

The 30-year-old’s ability is in no doubt, he’s just seen a younger keeper take his place at a new-look Swansea City and has been swept to the side by his manager.

Only this morning has Nordfeldt spoke out about his omission from the side, and has hinted that he may be heading for the door in January.

He's definitely one that's not in Cooper's plans for the remainder of the season, and he will likely be a departee in the New Year.
