Millwall maintained their unbeaten start to the new season after seeing off Derby County at The Den on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Jake Cooper and Shaun Williams gave Neil Harris’ men a commanding lead inside the opening 20 minutes before a late David Nugget effort havled the deficit.

The Lions were good value for their lead in a first half they dominated in all areas of the game.

Their physical approach was too much for Frank Lampard’s side who could not handle them in the opening half an hour.

The Rams stepped it up in the second half as the Lions reverted to a more rooted stance as they looked to hold on to what they had.

Despite a late onslaught, Millwall held off for their first win of the season, inflicting a second successive defeat to a Derby side who have only one win this season from the opening day against Reading.

With that, here is one winner and one loser from the Championship clash between Millwall and Derby County on Saturday afternoon.

The mercurial midfielder had a hand in both Millwall’s goals in their weekend win over Derby.

Shaun Williams’ free-kick was flicked in by Jake Cooper before a stunning 30-yard strike took a deflection right into the top corner of Scott Carson’s net.

His overall performance was one to admire, being the defensive-minded steel the Lions needed to get the result over the line.

Undoubtedly, Williams’ biggest impact was having a hand in both goals to seal Neil Harris’ side their first three points of the campaign.

The striker had a difficult day on his return to The Den.

Derby’s new frontman, a former Lions loanee, offered little up top, mustering just one effort on goal, which was blocked.

He was scarcely able to turn the brick wall that was Jake Cooper and Shaun Hutchinson as he struggled to have any real impact on the game before he was hauled off to be replaced by Derby’s eventual goalscorer David Nugent.

Not the best day for Waghorn in a day that ended with defeat.
