One winner and one loser from Bristol City’s 2-0 defeat to Cardiff City

Bristol City lost vital ground on the play-off chasing teams around them in the Championship as they were beaten 2-0 by Cardiff City.

Curtis Nelson and Kieffer Moore were both on the scoresheet for the Bluebirds, as they picked up the three points at Ashton Gate.

Dean Holden’s side had previously been in with a real chance of a top-six finish, but will know that they need to put together a positive run of form at the earliest of opportunities to achieve that this season.

It’s now three consecutive defeats for Bristol City, and they’re now sat tenth in the Championship table, and six points adrift of the play-off positions.

The Robins are set to return to action on Wednesday evening, when they take on Sheffield United in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup at Bramall Lane.

We take a look at ONE winner and ONE loser from Bristol City’s 2-0 defeat to Cardiff City.

Winner: Nahki Wells

Wells might not have got himself on the scoresheet, but he was one of the few Bristol City players to come away with credit to their name following the defeat.

The forward had two shots off target, and had a pass accuracy of 80%, with 12 of those being successful.

He also won eight out of his 12 ground duels during the match, as well as drawing five fouls from Cardiff City players. (Statistics sourced from Sofascore)

Loser: Alfie Mawson

Mawson signed on loan for Bristol City from Fulham earlier this season, and has gone on to make 13 appearances in total for Dean Holden’s side.

But it was an afternoon to forget for the Robins defender, who struggled to cope with the physicality of Cardiff’s Kieffer Moore, who netted their second goal of the match.

Mawson won ten of his 17 aerial duels, and just one of three ground duels in the match, so there is certainly room for improvement after this defeat.

The defender also lost possession of the ball 17 times during the match against the Bluebirds, and he’ll be hoping for a better showing against Sheffield United in the FA Cup in midweek. (Statistics sourced from Sofascore)
