Sunderland got their 2021/22 League One campaign off to a solid start on Saturday afternoon, with a 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic at The Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats fell behind a 15 minutes into the game, when Gwion Edwards opened the scoring on his debut for Wigan.

However, Lee Johnson's side would not be behind for long, with Aiden McGeady levelling from the penalty spot just moments later.

Ross Stewart then struck early in the second to complete the turnaround for Sunderland, and with no further goals, ensure that the Black Cats started their season with all three points.

Here, we've taken a look at one winner and one loser within Sunderland's squad, from that opening day success.

Winner: Ross Stewart

With Charlie Wyke lining up against Sunderland, rather than for them on Saturday, there was inevitably plenty of scrutiny on the man tasked with replacing the Black Cats' 31-goal striker of last season.

That task against Wigan, fell to Ross Stewart, and he certainly carried out that role impressively, leading the line effectively for Lee Johnson's side, before heading home the winning goal early in the second-half.

As talk continues to circle about potential attacking incomings at The Stadium of Light, that performance will certainly have been a useful one for Stewart, since it puts him in a strong position to retain that starting position, even if those prospective new recruits do arrive at the club.

Loser: Will Grigg

While Saturday may have worked out well for one striker in Ross Stewart, it appears to have been a more frustrating one for another, in the form of Will Grigg.

Back at Sunderland and again looking to finally make his mark at the Stadium of Light after a loan with MK Dons during the second half of last season, the 30-year-old was unable to even get off the bench and on the pitch for the Black Cats against his former club over the weekend.

If Stewart's performance, as expected, is to cement his place in the starting XI off the back of his performance against the Latics, Grigg may be forced to settle for a place on the bench for the time being, something he will surely not have hoped for, or expected, when he first arrived at Sunderland.
