One winner and one loser at Watford if they can sign Astion Villa player this summer

on

In recent weeks, Watford have emerged as suitors for Aston Villa forward Cameron Archer.

Interest from the Hornets first broke last week when TalkSPORT football correspondent Alex Crook tweeted that Watford, along with Middlesbrough and Rangers, were interested in a move for the 20-year-old.

Since then, it has been revealed that Watford are ‘well positioned’ to secure the youngster on loan should Steven Gerrard choose to send him out once again next season.

Archer spent the second half of the 2021/22 campaign at Preston North End, scoring seven goals in 20 Championship appearances.

With that being said, if he does move to Vicarage Road, it will obviously have an impact on some of Watford’s current players.

Here, we’ve picked out one winner and one loser in WD18 should Archer link up with the club in the coming months.

Loser: Cucho Hernandez

A big loser should Archer arrive would likely be Cucho Hernandez.

If Rob Edwards deploys a front two at Watford next campaign, as he did at Forest Green, at present, you would expect Hernandez to be the most advanced man leading the line.

Given that Archer would be coming in on loan, you’d have to think Aston Villa would want assurances over his playing time, which would likely push Hernandez down to the Hornets bench.

Can you remember how much Watford paid for these 22 summer signings?

CRAIG DAWSON

That is not to say Archer is better than Hernandez, but simply that were he to arrive at Vicarage Road, you would have to think game time is virtually guaranteed.

The 23-year-old Colombian striker scored five goals and registered two assists in 25 Premier League appearances in 2021/22.

Winner – Joao Pedro

Although he is also a forward, it could be argued that Joao Pedro could be a big winner if Archer arrived at Vicarage Road.

Once again, this depends on Rob Edwards deploying a front two at the club next season, but Archer could be the ideal striking partner for the Brazilian.

Full of pace and liking to play on the shoulder of the last defender, Archer’s skillset compliments Joao Pedro’s very well.

Joao Pedro likes to get the ball to feet, hold it up, bring others into play, and dribble and as such, suits the deeper lying role in a front two as opposed to the advanced man.

Not only that, but the arrival of another exciting young forward would ease the goalscoring burden that is set to be on Joao Pedro next campaign.

At present, following Josh King’s departure, and the likely sale of Emmanuel Dennis and Ismaila Sarr, only Cucho Hernandez and Joao Pedro remain as striking options for the Hornets at present.
