There is plenty of exciting young talent on show in the Football League at the moment, with a host of England youth internationals learning their trade outside of the Premier League.

One player who seems to have an exciting future ahead of him is Sheffield Wednesday’s George Hirst, an England youth international who is already making headlines at just 18.

Hirst is the son of former Sheffield Wednesday legend David Hirst, but is yet to make a major impact in the first-team at Hillsborough, with Carlos Carvalhal limiting the striker’s opportunities.

Carvalhal handed Hirst just two senior appearances last season – both of which came as a substitute – despite the striker excelling at youth level and scoring 40 goals for the Owls.

Hirst’s lack of first-team opportunities with Wednesday have cast serious doubt over his future at Hillsborough, with the youngster not willing to extend his contract in South Yorkshire, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

The 18-year-old, is currently impressing for England’s under-19 squad, and scored a hat-trick in a recent 7-1 victory over Poland, attracting further attention from across English football.

Leicester City and Everton have had approaches for the striker rejected in the past year, with the Foxes’ interest coming in the recent summer window, where a reported £2m bid was rejected by Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday’s Sky Bet Championship rivals Leeds are also monitoring Hirst’s situation, with reporters close to the Elland Road club expecting the Whites to reignite their interest in the 18-year-old during the January transfer window.

Despite not yet showing his talent at senior level, Hirst is attracting some serious attention from across England, with his performance at youth level indicating that he has a big future in the game.

Sheffield Wednesday have a fight on their hands in keeping Hirst at Hillsborough, with the striker developing into one of England’s top talents.
