One-time Bristol City and Derby County target Ivan Toney has hinted that he may look to leave the club in the summer if they're not promoted to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has been fantastic for Peterborough United this season – scoring 26 goals and contributing seven assists in 39 appearances.

Toney arrived at the club in 2018 and proved his worth in his debut season, scoring 23 goals and providing eight assists, but has stepped things up a gear in the 2019/20 campaign.

His performances have caught the attention of some clubs higher up the English football pyramid, with Bristol City, Derby County, and Burnley all linked in January but the £12 million asking price saw him remain at the club.

The English forward has fired Peterborough into contention for the play-offs and helped them to climb to sixth in the table with 11 games still to play.

You feel he will be key if the Posh are to secure promotion to the Championship this term but it appears he wants to be there next season with or without his current club.

Toney was named the best player in League One by FourFourTwo this month and was asked where he sees himself in six months' time.

He replied (via the Bristol Post): "Hopefully being top goalscorer helps us to get promoted.

"I seriously believe we can go up and hopefully I'm in the Championship, whether with posh or someone else.

"Or maybe a Premier League team takes a chance on me.

"You have to believe in yourself, haven't you?"

The Verdict

Toney has been fantastic for the Posh over the past two seasons and has shown he is a prolific striker at League One level.

40 league goals in the past two seasons is not a record to be sniffed at and you do wonder which Championship sides will be looking to offer him a chance to step up should his current side miss out on promotion.

Toney certainly deserves a chance to prove himself in the second tier of English football – it will be interesting to see whether City or Derby would be interested in a move for him in the summer.
