Sheffield Wednesday have shortlisted Sol Campbell for their vacant manager's vacancy, according to Nancy Frostick of The Athletic.

The former Arsenal and Tottenham defender is currently looking for a new role after leaving Southend United at the end of last season.

A manager with real experience in troubled surroundings, Campbell is among the contenders for the role at Hillsborough and could hold talks over the coming days.

So, what do you make of this news from a Sheffield Wednesday perspective? Good signing? Needed?

I'm really not sure about this. Campbell doesn't exactly have the best of managerial records so far in his career, and I think this would be too much of a step-up for the former Arsenal defender. He's not managed in the Championship before, and it would be too much of a risk for Sheffield Wednesday to appoint someone with little experience at this level. That's not to say that Campbell won't succeed as a manager in the future, but I don't think the Owls would be the right fit for him at this moment in time. Sheffield Wednesday need a manager that is proven at this level, and I'm not surprised to hear that they're eyeing a move for the likes of Tony Pulis and Paul Cook, who would be far better options for me, as they have much more experience in the Championship. A move for Campbell is one they should avoid at the moment.

This is an interesting one.

Campbell has impressed me in the past and mostly done a good job in very difficult roles.

I'd love to see him get the chance to prove himself at a club like Wednesday and I think there is a good chance he could do fantastic things.

There shouldn't be concern about him leading them in a relegation battle, given what he did at Macclesfield.

That said, I just think that the Owls shouldn't miss out on the likes of Eddie Howe and Paul Cook if they have the chance to hire either.

If either are available, they should be first choice for me.

Given some of the calibre of names that are being mentioned, appointing Campbell would be extremely underwhelming from a Wednesday point of view.

Whilst the work he did with Macclesfield was impressive, his tenure at Southend was nothing short of disastrous.

Wednesday requires someone with far more experience of the Championship and a candidate that's going to be able to come in, steady the ship, and quickly pick up positive results.

Campbell doesn't tick many of those boxes, so it's definitely a name the Owls should be desperately looking to avoid.
