Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Shrewsbury Town last night and the performance of Lynden Gooch at right-back has proven a talking point among fans of the North East club.

The Black Cats will have been hoping that the 1-0 win against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday could be a turning point for them but they threw away a one-goal lead against relegation candidates Shrewsbury yesterday.

Alex Pritchard's curling strike gave Lee Johnson's side an early lead but despite David Davis seeing red in first-half stoppage time, the visitors were unable to secure all three points due to Daniel Udoh's 64th-minute equaliser.

With Luke O'Nien filling in at left-back, Carl Winchester in midfield, and a string of injuries, Gooch started at right-back against the Shrews – a position he's not played too often in the past.

A winger by trade, the 25-year-old got up and down the right flank well during his 74 minutes on the pitch – crossing six times, creating one big chance, and taking two shots himself (Sofascore).

However, he also lost possession 15 times and won just two of his six ground duels.

Gooch's performance has proven a talking point among Sunderland fans on Twitter, with some frustrated and others impressed.
