Some surprise news came out of the Cardiff City Stadium this morning as it was announced that Lee Tomlin had departed the club with his contract being terminated.
The 32-year-old still had nearly a year to run on his deal, which was extended in January 2020 after strong performances under Neil Harris’ management, but after struggling with injuries for well over a year it was decided that Tomlin and the Bluebirds should part ways.
The attacking midfielder signed for Cardiff from Bristol City in the summer of 2017, having previously played for the likes of Middlesbrough and Peterborough United.

Tomlin struggled in his first two seasons with the club, eventually heading out on loan in both of them but he finally hit his stride in the 2019-20 campaign under Harris, scoring nine times and notching 10 assists.
But he picked up a groin injury early on last season that’s he’s been unable to really recover from, and after suffering from setbacks this year the two parties have decided to go their separate ways.
It’s a frustration for Cardiff fans who have seen the club lacking in depth in the attacking midfield area where Tomlin plays his best football, and they’ve been reacting to news of his departure on social media.
Jesus Christ! Any more creative players getting the chop?

Makes the decision to not bring in a creative midfielder in the summer even more baffling

Sad loss. So talented but the right decision given his fitness issues.

The right call, but still sad nonetheless. Fans seem to have small minds and forget this man carried us to the playoffs 2 seasons ago

Loved him but getting rid of wages for a player who couldn’t stay fit, can’t really complain too much

100% right call. Don’t get why people are gutted. Never ever fit and is one of the highest earners.

Waste of money and talent, sad to see but 100% right choice, Vassell next and Murphy once he is back from Preston

It’s for the best. While he is a good player, you can’t rely on him at all with the constant fitness issues. Good luck to the guy.

Happy days, one less problem at the club
