Barnsley have had an exceptional season in League One, where they won promotion to the Championship, despite not many fancying them to fend off the tough competition.

With Portsmouth stronger than they have been in years and Sunderland relegated to League One last year, it looked like those two were the ones to beat this season.

The Tykes had other ideas though and romped home to automatic promotion, along with Luton who also defied a few pre-season predictions.

Daniel Stendel has got the best out of many of his players and there have been a lot of heroes, so it will be hard to choose someone who hasn’t been exceptional.

That is our job though, and here, we choose one hero and one villain from their 2018/19 season - one player who has excelled, and someone seen as the villain at Oakwell.

Do you agree, or have we missed a hero or villain from our selection? Let us know in the comments section below.

Hero: Alex Mowatt

Alex Mowatt has been the best midfielder for Barnsley this season and has been crucial to everything Daniel Stendel’s men have achieved this year.

After making the huge decision to leave Leeds, the club where he made his name, Mowatt has earned his stripes in League One and will deservedly be back in the Championship next year.

Joey Barton

We move away from players here and focus on Joey Barton following his alleged assault on Daniel Stendel during Barnsley's clash with his Fleetwood side.

He's not a popular figure in many places, but especially Barnsley after his apparent antics last month.
