Blackburn Rovers’ Sky Bet League One campaign got off to the worst possible start, with Tony Mowbray’s side suffering a 2-1 defeat against Southend United.

Despite starting the season among the favourites for promotion and with the likes of Peter Whittingham, Charlie Mulgrew and Danny Graham in the side, Blackburn were picked off by two first-half goals.

Ryan Leonard and Michael Kightly struck within the space of 11 minutes midway through the first-half, which gave Phil Brown’s side a 2-0 lead at half-time.

Mulgrew pulled a goal back shortly after the break to put Blackburn back in the game, but despite their late attempts to rescue a point, Southend hung on to pick up an impressive three-points.

Mowbray will now take his side to face Coventry City in the League Cup during the week, before heading back to Ewood Park to face Doncaster Rovers.
