Lincoln City will travel to Wembley for the first time in their 134-year history in April, after a penalty shoot out victory over Chelsea U23’s ensured Danny Cowley’s side progressed to the final of the Checkatrade Trophy.

The Imps dominated proceedings against Chelsea’s youngsters, with early chances falling to striker Matt Rhead and midfielder Elliott Whitehouse.

The home side pressed in front of a sell out crowd at Sincil Bank, before centre half Luke Waterfall finally broke the deadlock with a powerful header at the back post.

Young Blues star Daishawn Redan equalised against the run of play in the 78th minute forcing the game to penalties, before homegrown star Lee Frecklington, who has just returned to the the Imps following spells with Peterborough and Rotherham, stepped up to fire the winning penalty and send his boyhood club to the home of football.
