Portsmouth have reportedly joined the race to sign Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland this summer, with Sunderland also believed to be keen on the forward.

The 23-year-old was in exceptional form for the Scottish Championship side last term, scoring 34 goals in a total of 41 appearances in all competitions.

But with his contract set to expire at the end of the month, the prolific forward has recently bid farewell to the Scottish outfit, as he begins to attract interest from a host of clubs.

Pompey, who have recently had a bid rejected for Peterborough striker Matty Godden. are clearly in the market for another forward this summer.

Here, we discuss whether Shankland would be a good signing for Kenny Jackett's side...

George Harbey

"On paper this looks superb.

"Shankland has scored plenty of goals over the years, and is the kind of player that Pompey miss up top.

"To score 34 goals at any level of football is hugely impressive, regardless of whether you're playing in the Scottish Championship or not.

"To sign a player of Shankland's quality on a free transfer would be a massive coup by Kenny Jackett."

George Brooks

"This could be a great signing for Portsmouth.

"Shankland is an exciting player and has become one of the most prolific strikers in Scotland over the past couple of seasons - he should be able to make an impact at Fratton Park.

"Pompey need some more firepower up front and Shankland could be a fantastic signing for Kenny Jackett's side, especially as they'd be getting him on a free transfer."

Toby Wilding

"This could be a good signing for Pompey.

"Shankland's record in Scotland is hugely impressive, and it would be a huge boost to Pompey if they sign him and he is able to carry that over to England.

"The fact that he is available on a free transfer, and shouldn't carry to high a wage bill given he is coming from the lower tiers of Scottish football, suggests that there won't be too much of a financial loss for Pompey in this either, even if Shankland doesn't take to English football."
