The 23-year-old, who signed for the Reds from Walsall in 2013, has suggested that he was played out of position for Nottingham Forest under managers Stuart Pearce and Dougie Freedman.

Preferring to play as an attacking midfielder, the youngster has been placed out of his comfort zone at Forest by being played as a winger. The 23-year-old has made his feelings clear as to why his performances suffered in the 2014/15 Sky Bet Championship season as a result.

However, Paterson has now made the loan move to Huddersfield Town and is keen to push on an thrive at the John Smiths Stadium in his preferred number 10 role. .

Speaking to the Yorkshire club's official website, he said: "As a youngster, I played as a number 10 and I feel that is my best position.

"Obviously some teams don't use that position and have accommodated me by letting me float in from the left, so I feel like I can play across those positions.

"I'm definitely not an out-and-out winger though."

The ex-Walsall man had a superb first season at Nottingham Forest, thriving under old boss Billy Davies in a system that suited his style of play. Scoring a memorable hat-trick in Forest's 5-0 home thrashing of West Ham is an accolade that illustrates Paterson's potential.

However, the midfielder struggled to find appearances last season and failed to come good when given a rare chance.

The lack of an attacking playmaker in Forest's tactical set-up is something that Paterson believes hindered his chances of excelling at the City Ground. The midfielder forged a good relationship with Forest fans, yet failed to make the impact that was expected of him last season.

Whether or not he will be accommodated into the Forest team after his loan spell at Huddersfield remains to be seen, but the youngster has made it clear that he was not happy with his role at Forest.
