Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sends Tahith Chong parting message after move to Birmingham City

Tahith Chong was on target for Manchester United in their 2-1 win over Championship side Derby County in a pre-season friendly at Pride Park.

The winger netted their opener on the day after 18 minutes, with Facundo Pellistri doubling that lead for the Red Devils. Colin Kazim-Richards halved Derby’s deficit, but it was the Premier League side that ran out narrow winners.

Chong has signed for Birmingham City on loan for the 2021/22 season, but featured for Manchester United in the friendly due to their lack of depth due to participation in both the European Championships, and Copa America.

Speaking in an interview with MUTV (quotes sourced from Birmingham Live) after their win over the Rams, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer issued his thoughts on Chong’s performance on the day, before wishing him well in his move to Birmingham City.

“He did well to win the ball and I thought maybe he should have finished far corner.

“But well done to keep going and he’s got the talent, so good luck for his time at Birmingham.”

Chong could be in line to make his debut for Lee Bowyer’s side on the opening day of the Championship season, where they take on Sheffield United, in what is likely to be a tricky test at Bramall Lane on Saturday 7th August.

The Verdict:

It’s the ideal start to his pre-season, that’s for certain.

Chong will have learned a lot from training with the Manchester United first-team, and it was great to see him on the scoresheet recently against Derby County.

The winger will be eager to make a name for himself at senior level in English football, and Birmingham City will be hoping he can make a positive impact with them this term.

The early signs are promising, and if he’s at his best, then Birmingham could be making a surprise push for a top-six finish in the Championship.
