Oldham Athletic finished the Sky Bet League One season in 17th place, four-points outside the relegation zone, but it could have been a lot worse for the Latics, who were bottom of the table in early January.

Key to their turnaround was the appointment of John Sheridan, who steered the club from the foot of League One, to their eventual 17th placed finish.

However, he was not the only man to thank at Boundary Park, with Lee Erwin chipping in with a considerable amount of goals for Oldham during his season-long loan from Leeds United.

Erwin scored ten goals across all competitions, including eight of Oldham’s 31 league goals during the 2016/17 campaign.

The 23-year old is heading back to Elland Road, and with no certainties that he will return to Boundary Park, Oldham must be looking elsewhere in the transfer window for a goalscorer.

One player who Oldham could look to is Exeter City’s David Wheeler, who has been in exceptional form in League Two, helping The Grecians to finish inside the play-offs.

Wheeler has bagged 20 goals for Exeter this season, with the forward more than doubling his goal tally from his previous three years with the club.

The 26-year old’s goalscoring form will have brought him to the attention of a number of clubs in the lower leagues, and Oldham should move quickly to bring Wheeler to Boundary Park, to replace the goals that are heading back to Elland Road with Erwin.

If Sheridan fails to recruit a natural goalscorer in the summer, then Oldham may not find themselves as lucky in the League One fight for survival next season.
