Oldham Athletic have announced that manager Pete Wild has left the club due to personal reasons just days after the League Two season drew to a close.

Wild took over from Paul Scholes for his second caretaker spell after the former Manchester United midfielder quit just a month into his role at Boundary Park earlier in the season and the club's owner Abdullah Lemsagm paid tribute to him on the official website.

“Pete worked extremely hard for this club of which I am grateful for, but came to me today saying he wants to spend some time away from football.

“He’s a great guy, I’m sad to see him go and would’ve liked him to stay with the club but I respect his decision and wish him well for the future.”

Wild was in charge when the Latics saw off Fulham in a dramatic tie at Craven Cottage in the third-round of the FA Cup, becoming a fan-favourite in the process.

According to the club's announcement, more details on the new management will be made in due course.

The verdict

It is a shame it has come to this.

Wild did a very solid job at quite an unstable club with a temperamental owner and it will be very interesting to see who they bring in next.

I cannot imagine Wild will be out of work for long, however.
