As Jos Luhukay looks to strengthen Sheffield Wednesday’s midfield, he should look to a former Owl.

Alex Lopez has been released by Sporting Gijon and is available on a free transfer.

With Jacob Butterfield moving to Derby and David Jones underwhelming, Lopez could provide the squad with much needed depth.

The 30-year old Spaniard missed most of last season through a back injury.

He recovered sufficiently to make a string of appearances at the end of the season including a full 90 minutes against Cordoba and two substitute appearances in the play-offs.

However, he had little time for him to establish himself in the side. Consequently the club decided to part ways.

For Sheffield Wednesday, they would be signing a player who helped guide them to the 2015/16 play-off final.

He proved himself to be a strong passer of the ball who helped orchestrate play in the centre of the park. His 50.6 passes per 90 minutes that season compare favourably with the passing at Hillsborough last season.

They would put him third for the club, behind Barry Bannan and Jacob Butterfield.

However, there would be concerns over his fitness.

While long-term injuries are less worrying with younger players, a 30-year old missing half the season through injury sets alarm bells ringing.

Such an injury could flare up again. Consequently, a move for Lopez must be made in the view of signing a squad player.

He will not cost much, he will add depth to the side, and he would be an improvement on Jones.
