The 2021/22 season could be something of a challenging one for Blackburn Rovers.

Despite assembling what had looked to be a strong squad in all positions, last season saw Tony Mowbray's side fall well short in their attempts to reach a Championship play-off place, eventually finishing 15th in the second-tier standings.

What will have made that rather underwhelming 2020/21 campaign even more disappointing, is the fact that it came despite the spectacular goalscoring exploits of Adam Armstrong, who finished second in the overall Championship scoring charts.

But with Armstrong attracting interest from the Premier League, the task facing Rovers could get even bigger in the coming campaign, if they are unable to hold on to the striker, or find a replacement for him.

So with much focus around Ewood Park currently on goalscorers, we've taken a look here, at Blackburn top scorers from each of the past ten seasons, and how their efforts impacted Rovers that particular year.

We start this list with a season that those associated with Blackburn Rovers would most likely rather forget, with the club suffering relegation from the Premier League in the 2011/12 season.

One rare bright point from that campaign was the form of striker Yakubu, who having moved to Ewood Park in the summer of 2011, scored 17 goals in 30 league games that season, most memorably netting all four of his side's goals in a 4-2 win over Swansea, despite Rovers' struggles that season.

However, the drop into the Championship seemingly did not appeal to Yakubu, and he headed for China in the summer of 2012, following confirmation of Blackburn's relegation to the second-tier.

Following their drop into the Championship for the 2012/13 season, Blackburn immediately broke their transfer record to complete the signing of Jordan Rhodes from Huddersfield, and it certainly paid off.

Despite going through no fewer than five different permanent managers across the course of the season, Rhodes remained a constant source of goals for the Ewood Park club, scoring 26 times in 43 league games in his debut campaign in Lancashire.

Not surprisingly, that saw Rhodes claim the club's Player of the Season award, but in spite of his efforts, Rovers still finished 17th in the Championship table, just four points clear of the relegation zone.

In what was something of a theme during the early years of Blackburn's time back in the Championship, Rhodes was once again consistently in the goals during the 2013/14 season.

The Scot featured in every league game for Blackburn that campaign, and scored 25 goals across the course of those outings, a return which saw him pass the milestone of 50 goals for the club in the process.

Indeed, it would be a much more improved campaign all-round for Rovers, who under the management of Gary Bowyer, finished eighth in the Championship table, frustratingly missing out on a play-off place by just two points come the final day of the season.

Once again, Rhodes was would be a consistent source of goals for Blackburn during the 2014/15 season, and this time around, he wasn't the only one.

While Rhodes himself finished the season as Blackburn's highest league scorer with 21 from his 45 games in the Championship, two goals for Rudy Gestede in the FA Cup to go with his 20 in the league, saw the Benin centre forward top the club's scoring charts across all competitions.

But despite having both Gestede and Rhodes banging in the goals, Rovers were unable to take full advantage, as they finished ninth in the Championship table, 11 points adrift of a top-six spot.

Rovers would experience something of a considerable drop in form in the 2015/16 season, something which was reflected in the club's final scoring charts.

Despite leaving Ewood Park late in the January transfer window to complete a move to Premier League bound Middlesbrough, Rhodes once again finished as Blackburn's top scorer, finding the net ten times in 25 outings prior to his move to the Riverside Stadium.

Indeed, Blackburn - who had already seen Gestede depart in the summer of 2015 - eventually finished 15th in the final Championship standings, some 19 points short of a play-off place, following a season that saw Paul Lambert take over from Gary Bowyer in November 2015, only to announce his departure the following summer before the end of the campaign.

Things would get even worse for Blackburn during the 2016/17 season, as they were relegated to the third-tier of English football for what was the first time in 37 years.

That was despite their resurgence in the final third of the season following the appointment of Mowbray, and one of the few bright points of the season came in the form of Danny Graham.

Having impressed on loan with Rovers during the second half of the 2015/16 season, Graham would return to Ewood Park on a permanent basis during the summer of 2016, and went on to score 12 goals in 35 league outings for the club in 2016/17, despite their drop out of the Championship.

Following that drop into League One, Blackburn produced a perfect response to that in 2017/18, securing an immediate promotion back to the Championship.

One man who played a central role in that was Bradley Dack. Signed from Gillingham in the wake of Rovers' relegation, Dack netted 18 goals in 42 league games during his first season at Ewood Park to help guide them back to the second-tier at the first time of asking.

Perhaps not surprisingly given his influence across the course of that year, Dack would be named Blackburn's Player of the Season, also receiving the same accolade for League One from the EFL.

It was a solid return to the Championship for Blackburn in 2018/19, as they made a comfortable return to the second-tier, thanks in no small part to the aforementioned Dack and Graham.

Both players scored a club high 15 league goals that campaign, as Mowbray's side finished 15th in the final standings, having rarely looked like being dragged into a relegation battle.

It was Dack who would ultimately finish as the club's Golden Boot winner - thanks to two more goals in the cup than Graham - but despite that, it would be the latter who was crowned the club's Player of the Season following some age-defying performances from the veteran striker.

After an excellent second half of the season on loan at Blackburn during their League One promotion campaign, Rovers brought Armstrong back to Ewood Park from Newcastle on a permanent basis in the summer of 2018.

However, it was the 2019/20 campaign when the striker really started to come into his own in the Championship, producing a number of spectacular goals and filling the void left by the season-ending injury suffered by Dack midway through the season in brilliant fashion.

Armstrong would end the season with 16 goals from his 46 league appearances, claiming the club's Player of the Season award, as well as the Goal of the Season title for a 40-yard stunner in the win at Cardiff as Rovers claimed an 11th place finish in the Championship.

As has already been mentioned, Rovers fell away again somewhat in the 2020/21 campaign with a 15th place finish in the Championship, but Armstrong simply went from strength to strength.

The 24-year-old netted a remarkable 28 league goals in just 40 Championship matches last season, although in stark contrast to the previous campaign, all but one of those efforts was from inside the area.

Indeed, the striker's efforts were key to ensuring Rovers avoided being dragged into a relegation battle, and included three hat-tricks across the course of the season, something not managed by a Blackburn player since Alan Shearer in the 1995/96 campaign, meaning that interest from the top-flight, is certainly no surprise.
