Leeds United have today confirmed that goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald has left the club after just one season after he sealed a return to Germany with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 28-year old stopper was a summer signing 12 months ago with Thomas Christiansen coming in as manager replacing Garry Monk who had used Rob Green in goal.

It was a controversial decision at the time and one that didn't pay off with the former Werder Bremen man struggling to get to grips with English football.

He was dropped by Christiansen but then won his place back when Andy Lonergan struggled too. Yet, after the Danish boss was sacked, he was then dropped after continuing his poor form under Paul Heckingbottom, with youngster Bailey Peacock-Farrell preferred.

Even though the former Barnsley boss has since departed it's clear Wiedwald wasn't up to the standard required in the Championship and the club announced on their website that he had moved on.

They didn't mention a fee for the player that cost the Whites £500,000 last season.

The Verdict

This is good news for Leeds fans and they will hope it's the first of many departures as there are too many players in the squad who just aren't good enough.

That's how it was with Wiedwald. He struggled with the physicality of the league, seeming reluctant to come off his line at times and also made too many basic errors.

It's best for all involved that he has moved on and the Yorkshire club now need to find a proven number one that can help their promotion push.
