After returning to the Madejski Stadium in December 2015, the 53-year old proved unable to string any sort of momentum together and his popularity was largely on the wane.

The Royals were only able to muster a 17th placed finish in the Championship, a far cry from parts of his initial tenure during which the club were playing Premier League football.

A miserable end to the campaign appeared to be the tipping point for the former Leeds coach, who has now left the Berkshire outfit for a second time in three years.

‘After careful consideration, the board of Reading Football Club have taken the difficult decision to relieve Manager Brian McDermott of his duties’, read a club statement.

‘We would like to sincerely thank Brian for all his hard work since his return to the club in December 2015 and wish him well in his future career.’

Rather surprisingly, a shock move for former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has been mooted as the club look to secure a replacement ahead of the new season.

The Dutchman is believed to be in London today meeting club officials in effort to thrash out a deal.

Should McDermott have been given more time? Will Stam prove to be too much of a risk?
