Sky Bet League One outfit Blackburn Rovers have added a second player to their ranks this summer transfer window, confirming on the club’s official website the arrival of midfielder Richie Smallwood on a two-year contract.

The former Middlesbrough man was released by Rotherham United following their relegation to the third-tier alongside Tony Mowbray’s side, and joins Peter Whittingham through the entrance at Ewood Park in recent weeks.

Smallwood spent the 2016/17 campaign in League One after a loan stint at promotion chasers Scunthorpe United, racking up sixteen appearances for the Irons prior to returning to the Millers in January.

The 26-year-old was a prominent figure in Rotherham’s side which finished bottom of the Championship but opted against renewing a deal in Yorkshire.

Richie Smallwood and boss Tony Mowbray worked with each other during their time at Middlesbrough, during a time when the defensive midfield man played 60 outings for the Teeside team.
