Wayne Rooney has caused a fight between broadcasters over his services following his Derby County departure.

According to the Sun, the likes of Sky Sports and BT are both “desperate” to capture the addition of the 36-year old to their punditry team ahead of the upcoming season.

This comes following his exit from the Rams, where he managed for the last 18 months.

Despite leading the team to relegation to League One last season, the former striker earned plenty of plaudits for his time at Pride Park due to the financial difficulties surrounding the Rams.

It has also been suggested that the terrestrial TV channels are hoping to finalise plans to include Rooney in their coverage of the upcoming winter World Cup.

Rooney has previously appeared on one of Sky’s flagship programmes, talking alongside Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football.

The former Manchester United and Everton man is considered a prime candidate to work alongside Carragher and Gary Neville due to their history together during their playing days, as well as their good chemistry.

However, it is unlikely that it would be a permanent move to TV, with one insider claiming Rooney is keen to get back into management as his long-term plan.

The Verdict

Rooney appeared well on Monday Night Football, where he discussed the current football topics as well his time at Derby County up to that point.

It was disappointing news for supporters of the club that the former England international departed as manager.

He had built a strong rapport with both fans and players and received the backing of the home crowd despite everything surrounding the finances of the club.

Rooney will no doubt be receiving offers to get back into management, with the Englishman having shown he is more than capable of competing well at the Championship level.
