‘Odds on him getting booked?’ – Plenty of Middlesbrough fans react to return of former player

Middlesbrough have been reunited with Lee Cattermole today, as the former player is set to take up a coaching role with the club’s Under-18 side as confirmed by their official website.

Back when the player was a teenager, he featured in 69 league games for Boro before eventually heading on to Wigan and then Sunderland.

He spent the majority of his career with the Black Cats, making over 200 appearances for the club. However, his most recent excursion saw him head to VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands, where he played 11 times.

Now though, Cattermole is back where it all began at the Riverside Stadium and will now take up a coaching role with the club.

It looks like his playing days are over now then and instead, the former player is heading into a staff role in the world of football. Where better to begin it than with his former side and the club’s supporters have now taken to Twitter to react to the news of the reunion.

Middlesbrough fans then seem relatively pleased to see the return of Cattermole, even if he did feature less than 100 times for them in the league. He certainly has plenty of experience in the Football League and this know-how can now be passed on to the club’s academy teams – which can only be a good thing.

Boro fans then can look forward to the return of Cattermole in Boro colours – and if the Under-18 side start to take after him, then you can certainly expect some tasty tackles to get put in from that side now going forward.

The Verdict

Lee Cattermole being brought back in to Middlesbrough as a coach is a nice move by the club.

The former midfielder can now imbue his wisdom onto a whole new generation of talent and considering his level of experience and expertise in the game, there is certainly plenty of that wisdom to go around. Going back to his former team also means he has that Boro connection – which is another thing that stands him in good stead.

The fans are certainly happy to have him back and this could likely be one of the first steps for him on the road to a bigger coaching role in the future. The fact he is now a member of staff means that he may end up moving up the ranks and getting bigger and better roles soon.

For now though, Cattermole’s undivided attention will be on the Middlesbrough Under-18 team – and they’ll surely be boosted by his appointment.
