Nuno Santo doesn't intend to change how Wolves approach games now that they have been promoted.

Wolves were ambitious in the summer because they brought in expensive signings such as Ruben Neves and a proven manager in Santo, but it worked wonders because they achieved promotion and won the league title with a massive 99 points.

The club have serious backing from the owners, but the main question was whether Wolves were going to play the same now they had achieved promotion because they played a 3-4-3 formation which constricted opposition teams and allowed them to dominate possession and territory with Neves being key to that.

Santo doesn't appear to want to change that based on his recent remarks as quoted by the Express & Star: "I am able to say now, not 100 per cent, but we will stick with it."

"We believe in it and we want to achieve an identity."

"Now we have to work on it. I am not obsessed about making an impression on the Premier League. I want to build a team who can play home and away the same – never change. Let’s try to do it."

"I will plan, I will think, but when you have such a good base to work on you do not change."

The Verdict

This is the right mentality to have going in to the Premier League because it allows Wolves to play to their strengths rather than being negative and grinding out results.

All three of the promoted sides from last season managed to stay up, which suggests that the gap in quality between the lower Premier League sides and the top Championship sides is quite small. Therefore, sticking with a style that the team knows well is the best option.
