Wolverhampton Wanderers made it six wins on the bounce last night with victory over Birmingham City, with the win moving Nuno Santo’s side four points clear at the top of the Championship table.

An eighth minute strike from prolific forward Leo Bonatini secured the three points, ensuring the Molineux side now lie a commanding ten points clear of third place Bristol City.

Wolves looked a shadow of the side that had tasted success in their previous five, with Birmingham creating opportunities under the lights at St Andrew’s.

However the hosts struggled to convert chances into goals, failing to hit the target over the course of ninety minutes.

Defender Harlee Dean’s 83rd minute red condemned the Blues to defeat, with the club sliding into the bottom three on goal difference.

Three points in the bag, Santo was delighted with the way his side conducted themselves on the pitch.

“Of course everybody felt at the end of the game that we should have done better,” Santo told the club’s official site.

“But this is good, this shows that we want to improve and play better.

“It was a tough game, but I think we deserved the win.”

The Verdict

The fact Wolves can play ugly and win is an ominous sign for their title rivals.

Wolves looked far from their best at St Andrew’s in a tough encounter, but emerging from the game with three points sends a clear message to the rest of the league.

The club are in exceptional form and confidence is at an all-time high, and fans will be delighted that their side showed character when things weren’t going to plan.

Wolves have had it all their own way in recent weeks but it will not always be this way, and they must accept that future challenges lie ahead.

Santo’s side must be admired for this win however, which must go down as their biggest three points of the season so far.
