Former Leeds United striker Kemar Roofe has claimed that the English football season should be completed by playing all the remaining fixtures or be made null and void.

Roofe left Elland Road to join Anderlecht in the summer and has seen his side's season cut short – with the Belgian top-flight handing Club Brugge the title due to their position in the table, despite the fact there were games still remaining.

His former side are top of the Championship and well set to end their 16-year absence from the Premier League but have seen their promotion push put on hold.

All EFL fixtures have been suspended until the end of the season due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Whites are waiting to see if, when and how the season will be concluded.

Speaking to the Sun, Roofe urged English football not to follow the route taken in Belgium.

He said: "You must finish the season or try to, otherwise I believe it’s not right to declare teams champions and promote and relegate clubs because there are too many games left to play."

Roofe added: "Null and void is a fairer way than not completing the season.

“You just say the season didn’t exist and everything stays the same, no-one won anything, no-one lost anything. Then you scrap it and start the next season."

The 27-year-old acknowledged that calling the season null and void would be harsh on his former club.

He explained: "That is the unfair side of calling the season null and void – those teams like Liverpool who have waited 30 years to win the title.

“And, of course, Leeds have been waiting for this moment for so many years to achieve this promotion.

“But both clubs hadn’t got the points on the board yet to win anything and, if you award them their prize, you have to relegate teams too and that is the big problem."

Roofe has seen his first season at Anderlecht hampered by injury. The striker has made just 16 appearances for the Belgian side –scoring seven goals and providing three assists.

The Verdict

It's interesting to hear Roofe's view on one of the biggest talking points in world football at the moment.

His view is perhaps slightly influenced by the fact that Anderlecht were robbed of their chance of competing for the title in the end of season play-offs but the 27-year-old makes some strong points nonetheless.

You'd imagine that Leeds would prefer to play all the remaining games this season but would settle for the conclusion of the campaign with no more football played – as long as it saw them promoted.
