Luton Town's promotion to the Championship was confirmed yesterday as they watched both Sunderland and Portsmouth lose crucial matches in hand.

It means the Hatters return to the second-tier after 15 years out of the limelight, having experienced the National League and flirted with financial ruin.

Their story is inspirational and as they face a future with a new ground in the planning, they look likely to become a staple of the Championship for the foreseeable future.

Staying up in the first season is going to be key and if they’re to do that, they might be wise to have a look at a former loan player with experience of the level.

In the middle of the park the Hatters have some wonderful players, Pelly Ruddock-Mpenza, Luke Berry and George Moncur are just three. They might be wise to add another with plenty of knowledge in the Championship.

Eunan O’Kane joined them on loan from Leeds United in the summer, but experienced a career-threatening injury that ended his season and his Kenilworth Road stay. With his Leeds United future looking bleak, he’s going to be on the hunt for a new club this summer.

He’s now on the road to recovery and perhaps the new Luton manager would be wise to invest some time and money in the Ireland midfielder. He’s experienced and would bring a certain knowledge to the club, as well as having some unique attributes as a holding midfielder.

Pelly Ruddock-Mpenza is sure to be first choice after a terrific season, but if the Hatters are going to survive, they’re going to need a less adventurous formation at times this season. Signing O’Kane would allow them to be more compact across the back and have protection just in front.

With a goalscorer already in the squad and some wonderful attacking talent adding to their threat, shoring up the middle of the park is likely to be on priority facing the new manager.
