Notts County have held talks with Paul Heckingbottom as the League Two strugglers look to source Harry Kewell’s permanent replacement at Meadow Lane.

It’s been an extremely tough start to the season for Notts, who last year were competing for promotion to League One.

A sluggish start to the season saw Kevin Nolan fired, whilst Kewell’s spell with Notts brought just three victories before he was given his marching orders.

Now, according to Alan Nixon, Heckingbottom is a man under consideration, with the League Two club holding talks with the 41-year-old about the vacancy.

Heckingbottom’s spell in charge of Barnsley was extremely successful, as he managed to lead the Tykes to promotion from League One in 2016.

From there, Heckingbottom guided Barnsley to mid-table in their first year back in the Championship.

However, after a tough start to last season, Heckingbottom jumped ship after he was offered the Leeds United job, with the 41-year-old overseeing the final 16 fixtures of the 2017/18 season.

Heckingbottom won just four of those fixtures and was replaced by Marcelo Bielsa in the summer.

Notts, who are on the lookout for their third manager already this season, are 23rd in the League Two table and suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Cheltenham on Saturday.

The Verdict

Heckingbottom’s record last year was poor, with the 41-year-old not impressing at Leeds or Barnsley.

However, when in League One, he built a strong side at Oakwell and won promotion.

Notts are in real trouble in League Two and need to find Kewell’s replacement quickly. This seems like it would be a shrewd appointment.
